[ Well color him impressed. And maybe a little surprised. And maybe some of that feeling bleeds through into his tone. ]
Can't think of anythin' worse 'an bein' stuck inside.
[ The choice to be honest about his profession or not is... not as difficult a choice to make as some might think. ]
Spent a lot of my life pickin' up merc gigs. Where 'm from... any job's better than starvin'. Scene here's not 'zactly the same 's home, but... there's jobs out there for that kinda thing.
For awhile. Worked a year with a group called the Red Iron, then took jobs here and there when people needed help. It's not my favorite kind of work, but it's better than being stuck behind a desk or - yes - going hungry. If I hadn't taken the Red Iron jobs, we'd have been without food or shelter.
[ He pauses for a moment, realizing something he hadn't thought of before. ]
Hard to believe the government here is so willing to help, honestly.
[ It's a story that V can relate to. One that instantly creates a kind of kinship that's hard not to value. Being without food or shelter's the hard wall that a lot of nomads find themselves up against at least once in their lifetime.
The comment about the government's a little less easy for V to understand. Where he's from, when the government's infected with megacorp eddies, people like him never stand to benefit all that much. Opposite, actually. He can't disagree that having a place to stay that's government-funded's the worst option, but he's always very fucking wary about it. ]
I do. I was always taught that's what makes the best in us, is our willingness to serve our fellows.
[ There's something in the pause before V responded that keys Hawke in that he'd said something that resonated with the other man. Probably over being poor and hungry, as it's a tale told by so many within Thedas and without. ]
I always preferred farm hand work, especially tending dogs. What sort of thing do you prefer over mercenary jobs?
[ He gathers V isn't the sort of man that enjoys killing, which is fine by Hawke. He knows many that do and for the lives they lead, that's fine, but doing what you want and doing what you have to in order to survive have mostly been disparate things for Hawke, and from V's words, he imagines the same. ]
[ The idea behind it is something that V's just as familiar with. Granted, his experience has been steeped in nomad history, their struggles. But helping people has been part of his world since he was a small child. Everybody in a nomad clan is expected to pitch in for the good of the clan, and that's a mentality that V took with him to Night City. ]
Never seen a dog in real life...
I have a cat though. Rescued him from my building back in Night City.
[ He has no idea what he likes doing outside of just surviving, but if he had to choose one thing-- ]
Been workin' on cars 'n bikes my whole life. Guess I'd be a mechanic. Vehicles're important where 'm from. Clans travel in big motorcades. 'cept if whatever you're drivin' ain't up to scratch, you know you're gonna be holdin' up a whole buncha other people.
